The Advantages of Saltwater Pools: Why They're a Superior Choice Over Traditional Pools

I have received numerous requests from buyers specifically interested in homes with saltwater pools. Understanding the principles and benefits behind saltwater pools, I wanted to share my findings. Currently, approximately 30% of all in-ground pools in the U.S. are saltwater.

How Saltwater Pools Work:

Unlike traditional pools that rely on store-bought chlorine, saltwater pools utilize an electrolytic chlorine generator. This device separates the salt in the pool water, converting it into chlorine, which is then circulated to sanitize and disinfect the water. Unlike chlorine-based pools, saltwater pools avoid the production of chloramines, the irritants responsible for the typical chlorine smell and eye irritation.

The Salinity of Saltwater Pools:

Contrary to popular belief, saltwater pools do not contain ocean-level salt concentrations. The salt concentration in these pools typically ranges between 3,000 and 5,000 parts per million, providing a water environment that closely resembles natural eye bathwater and ensures minimal irritation.

Benefits of Saltwater Pools:

1. Low Maintenance: Managing a saltwater pool is remarkably easier compared to a traditional pool. During the pool opening, simply add a few hundred pounds of salt, dissolve it, and activate the generator. There's no need for constant testing, measuring, or adding commercial chlorine. While additional salt may be required throughout the season, the maintenance is significantly reduced.

2. Lower Annual Costs: Salt chlorination generators produce chlorine at a cost of approximately $1 per pound, whereas store-bought chlorine can range from $2 to $4 per pound. This translates into substantial savings, with pool owners reporting a significant reduction in their annual chlorination expenses.

3. Consistent Chlorine Levels: Electrolytic chlorine generators automatically maintain consistent chlorine levels, eliminating the need for frequent testing and the hassle of purchasing and adding chlorine to the pool.

4. Enhanced Swimming Experience: Swimmers often describe saltwater pools as providing a silky-smooth feel without the irritation commonly associated with traditional pools. Saltwater pools are gentler on the eyes and do not discolor hair, offering a more enjoyable swimming experience.

Drawbacks of Saltwater Pools:

While saltwater pools offer many advantages, it is important to consider a few drawbacks:

1. Higher Initial Costs: The primary expense lies in the purchase and installation of the electrolytic chlorine generator, ranging from $600 to $1,200, along with additional installation fees.

2. Cell Replacement: The salt cells inside the generator will need periodic replacement, typically within four to five years for year-round pool usage or up to ten years for seasonal pool owners. Replacement costs range from $200 to $600.

3. Corrosion: Saltwater can corrode metal components in and around the pool, such as lights, heaters, screws, diving board attachments, and patio furniture. Appropriate precautions and maintenance are necessary to mitigate this issue.

4. Salt Stains: Splashing saltwater on soft stone surfaces, such as pool coping and decks, can lead to stains and pockmarks. Applying a sealant can help address this problem effectively.

Saltwater pools have gained popularity due to their lower maintenance requirements, cost savings, consistent chlorine levels, and enhanced swimming experience. While they may require higher upfront costs and occasional maintenance considerations, the overall benefits outweigh the drawbacks for many pool owners. Consider your preferences and consult with professionals to determine if a saltwater pool is the right choice for you.
